Museum of Mao Tse-tung will open in the Musin-Pushkin Country Estate

musin-pushkin estateIn July, a Chinese cultural centre will open in the main house of the Musin-Pushkin estate, located in Moscow’s Troickiy administrative district. This was announced by the mayor and Moscow government’s internet page.

“The collection for the exhibition will be brought to Moscow from Beijing. Photos of Mao Tse-tung will find their place in the restored halls”, told the architector in charge of the project, restorer Yelena Kiselyova.

In 1928, the estate was the lieu of the VIth congress of the Communist Party of China. This was the only congress that took place outside of the country. Mao Tse-tung was absent from the congress. He only took a leading role in the communist party in the late 1930’s. Nevertheless, the main exhibition of the museum will be dedicated to him anyways.

The halls will be decorated with photos of Mao and the delegates at the congress, information stands with quotes of the leader and banners with the communist party’s slogans.

The estate building was transferred to the Chinese cultural centre in September 2013 in the presence of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and the representative of the PRC, Xi Jinping.

The restauration of the two-story main building with mezzanines and a belvedere began in November 2015. According to Kiselyova, the restaurations are almost complete, all that remains is to fix the fence that leads to the main doors of the estate.

Mao Tse-tung was the first General Secretary of the PRC. In the 1930’s he took the lead in the Chinese Soviet Republic (existing in the rural regions of southern Central China). After its destruction, he became one of the organisers of the Long March to northern China. After the victory of the communists in 1949, Mao Tse-tung became the head of PRC and its leader up until his death on September 9, 1976.

Maoists consider him an important politician, the inspiration behind revolutionary movements across the world. Opponents call Mao Tse-tung a dictator – during his years in government tens of millions of persons died of hunger, executions and forced labour.
